Taiwan is committed to strengthening the global response to COVID-19 while promoting open trade and investment amid the pandemic, according to Minister without Portfolio Deng Chen-chung Nov. 16.
Deng, who heads the Cabinet-level Office of Trade Negotiations, said the country’s successful COVID-19 response measures have played a vital role in maintaining free trade and circulation of key supplies. He called on the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation to continue expanding cooperation and exchanges among member economies during this challenging time.
According to Deng, the government will work with other APEC members to address the needs of enterprises worldwide through digital technology and a people-oriented approach aimed at liberalizing trade and investment.
Deng made the comments during the 31st APEC Ministerial Meeting, which he attended alongside National Development Council Minister Kung Ming-hsin. Hosted by Malaysia, this year’s event was held online under the title “Optimising Human Potential Towards a Resilient Future of Shared Prosperity: Pivot. Prioritise. Progress.”
Also speaking at the annual gathering, Kung highlighted the importance of accessible, high-quality digital health care during the pandemic. Taiwan is willing and able to collaborate with other member economies on the basis of its strength in information and communications technology and medical care, Kung said, adding that the country’s contributions are expected to help foster a healthy, inclusive and sustainable Asia-Pacific.
The NDC minister also took the opportunity to express Taiwan’s support for APEC projects like La Serena Roadmap for Women and Inclusive Growth proposed last year.
Since joining APEC in 1991, Taiwan has made substantial contributions spanning areas such as disaster prevention, food security, information communication technology, small and medium enterprise development, and women’s economic empowerment. (YCH-E)
